It's true. That one picture changed our whole perspective of our planet.

That is a great image, but it ain't the first; it isn't even the first taken from lunar orbit. This one was. And, hanging in my "space room" [1] is a print from later in Lunar Orbiter 1's orbit, showing the Earth rising over the farside. NASA was throwing various old lunar orbiter prints out, so I took several dozen of them [2].

[1] Yes, I'm a geek. So what.

[2] One of the side benefits of being an intern at NASA.
I liked Sagan's pale blue dot best. That really brought it home.

Most of the adult males in my family worked at Rocketdyne in Canoga Park, California. I was 17 when Neil Armstrong walked on the moon. I was riding my Norton that day going to Laguna Beach.

I took a sickie from a power station construction site to watch it. I was 30. So, respect your elders, young feller...

What's Rocketdyne?

Wow, imagine the pressure on Mr Underwood and his team to develop those films. I like the blue dot comment by Sagan too Snowy. Makes you realise how isolated we are. By the way, I was a new baby at the time.lol

Our posturing, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the universe, are challenged by this point of light.
I particularly liked that bit. I get rather angry at the position taken by the climate change deniers. I am prepared to listen to those who are qualified to give an opinion, whether that position is for or against. So far, I haven't heard an opinion from a denier who was qualified to give one. Yet that pale blue dot is all we have. It seems to me that it makes more sense to err on the safe side.

By the way, I was a new baby at the time.lol

And I can see that you give due respect to your elders. I've given up with that Cat. She threatens to whack me with a cold hard sponge when she's looking after me in the old people's home...

I remember the first time I saw that picture -- I think it was in Life or Look magazine. And the feelings you described were exactly how I felt, even though I was a just a kid then. I was a big Star Trek fan then (and now) and I thought to myself that this was the beginning of our journey to the stars.

I was 11 when Neil Armstrong landed on the moon and I remember feeling lucky to be alive to witness and old enough to understand what was the most important historical moment of the 20th century..
I can remember seeing Sputnik 1. Like the rest of the world, including President Kennedy, I was gobsmacked. That was when he announced that the U.S. would put a man on the moon. I'll never forget the moment when it actually happened. The world has come a long way since then, although at times I do wonder.

Rocketdyne was an aerospace company that engineered and built the rocket engines for the space program. It is now part of Boeing.

Nicely written.

Hi to all in the group, I am new here.
Enjoying your different subjects and comments.

Speaking of Carl Sagan, I so miss him, loved his Cosmos series and his books. He had such a great way of explaining the hard to understand.

Cat's meow is worse than her scratch, she is a lovely Cat. She will take god care of you Snowy. She' probably even sneak you a JW or two.

Welcome aboard. Yes, Carl Sagan helped millions acquire a cosmic perspective on life.
I know. She takes good care of Betty, and I'm not much uglier than her. Betty, I mean...

lol, you crack me up Snowy
