Nothing like facts to get in the way of a good scare campaign.

This is the same sort of sh*te I have to listen to about the 'hoarding' Mexicans here in the States. It's perfectly fine to hire illegals when somoene needs lawns mowed or their toilets cleaned but if an immigrant, illegal or otherwise actually tries to gain a toe in as an actual employee or business owner, then they are a menace and "taking away jobs." The truth of the matter is really quite different, but I haven't been here for a while, so I won't be a ride guest and end my visit with a rant.
I think the Australian electorate has moved on from this xenophobic nonsense. Sadly, the conservatives haven't.
I really want to know what is wrong with these people that they are so damned frightened of any kind of change in the status quo. If I'd never rembraced changed in my life, I'd be the same foolish girl I was years ago, still believing in the 'evil eye'! Grrr.
I think that buried deep in our psyche there's a fear of anything different. People thinking rationally overcome this fear. People thinking irrationally don't. Many politicians think this way, but even some of the rational ones know that there are a lot of irrationally thinking people out there, and cynically try to use this to their political advantage by playing on the irrational fears of these people. Sadly, there's still enough out there to swing an election.

I know. Makes me sick and I think those politicians should be shot at dawn, preferably with no breakfast first.
