The never ending Right wing propaganda machine.

Daughter 1 was a broadcast journalist for a couple of years. She came to detest the industry and the loss of credibility and ethics so left journalism and decided to do something worthwhile - teaching. All media comes from only one or two sources today, so it is all tainted. Capitalism, got to love it!
"The Fairness Doctrine, which required this, was repealed 20 years ago."

I really, truly feel like this has been what has polarized the extreme right for quite some time. It's cause and effect. I feel that's why what used to be considered the "middle" of 20 or 30 years ago, is now considered the "left".

Our perceptions are now extremely skewed due to the media (talk radio being a huge influence obviously), and it leaves those who aren't quite savvy enough (or simply too young) to realize that fact and instead are just regurgitating all the reactionary garbage.

I almost went into journalism. Started working towards it as my degree in college, but I couldn't handle it. That was right when the FCC repealed all the fairness acts and you could see things were changing. I didn't get it back then, but I do now.

Life and opinion ebbs and flows though. The US election was a reaction to all that fear mongering. I'm interested to see what happens in the next 20 years.
I worked in radio for 23 years, many of those working for or alongside news-talk stations. I was amazed at what differences there were between the hosts in real life, and the hosts on the air. At one N-T, we had a conservative mid-day host, and a liberal afternoon host. They were exactly the same off the air--really good friends. On Fridays, though, they did a half-hour argument before the shift change.

I honestly believe there are two reasons there are more conservative shows than liberal shows. First off, more people will listen to conservative hosts. If the radio listener wanted liberal talk radio, there would be networks bouncing liberal shows off every satellite they could hit. There are huge companies who do nothing but analyze what people want from their media. The other reason, honestly, is that being a conservative host is easier, as is being a conservative listener is easier. What's easier than railing against foreigners and taxes? I mean nothing against either, of course, but it's hugely easy: if somebody agrees with your rant, they're anti-American, and they want to take your money and give it to foreigners.

This guy's essay is dead on. I don't listen to our local news-talk station, because I can't stand the idiocy. Ridiculous millions of people do, though.
After reading this, the print media lost all credibility for me. I don't blame your daughter for getting out.
I've always likened it to a pendulum. If it swings too far in either direction, sooner or later voters will vote for a return to the centre. In the last eight years it swung too far right.
I always thought the reason there were so many right wing shock jocks was that conservatives had more need for someone to do their thinking for them...
It probably has more to do with Gunderson Bee's "small penis" theorem than anyone would care to admit.
Most of life can be narrowed down to the penis theory, this is true.

This is getting way too deep for me...
Oh now, now: I've got a whole design concept in my head now. We could find a bunch of retro 70's photos of little girls swinging on swings, or little boys building sand castles, and then put all those hate words in pretty, floral typography over the photo. Like a contradiction of images and symbolism.

Hmmm. That's the GD in me. Maybe that IS getting too deep. But it's either here or *there* Snow. ;)

Sleepytime now....
! - i literally just read this article this morning - catching up with the articles i missed has been taking up all my time - this article was excellent

i've never listened to these radio personalities - ever (actually, i barely even listen to the radio - except for the classical channels - increasingly far and few between unfortunately ) - they all seemed to be blowhards who were more interested in sensationalism (which tended to flush out the crazies) than really hammering out the important issues of the day

the problem is - as usual - sheeple - far too willing to listen to the first imbecile who spouts anything remotely resembling their views on the radio

This is the comment I wrote about this article on Alternet:

Right wing talk show hosts specialize in simplistic, black and white thinking and rely heavily on ad hominem attacks.

They attract the lowest common denominator of listeners and appeal to people's basest, least civilized instincts.

I regularly monitor Neal Boortz in a "know your enemy" campaign, but I'd never call the show, as I know I'd not get a fair hearing for my views. I've seen how he "handles" callers who disagree. For one thing, he usually only lets the most inarticulate opposing callers on the air, whom he proceeds to make fun of and uses to "prove" his points. Any opposing callers who slip through who speak clearly, he prevents them from making their points by constant interruptions. He'll hang up on them if they begin to get the upper hand.

So, I know it's a pointless endeavor to call this show, or any others of the same ilk.

Rather, I make my responses on my blog, where I can make my point without interruption and where it can be read for months and years afterwards.

He'll hang up on them if they begin to get the upper hand.

Kind of like a certain conservative clown on Vox who likes to listen to them...
